A tradition since 1981, Fleet Week is the most anticipated Fall event in San Francisco.

With an estimated audience of 1 million, spectators are drawn every year to the city’s northern waterfront to be awed by a parade of Navy ships, along with a spectacular aerial show that includes the world renowned Navy Blue Angels. The 34th America’s Cup brings the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport back to the United States for the first time in 18 years. And it does so in style, with exciting new boats, a new format for the racing, and television and web coverage that takes the viewer into the racing as never before. There are two new classes of boats; both will be more powerful, more demanding of the crews and faster than anything seen at the America’s Cup to date.

Bringing the racing to the people is a new priority. Newly added near-shore race courses are sure to thrill those on site. Upon reaching its zenith in San Francisco, the host city of the 34th America’s Cup, the spectacular natural amphitheater of San Francisco Bay will be a glorious setting for this historic and much-anticipated race finale.

SF Transportation Statistics

We ran across the annual fact sheet published by the SFMTA and thought it interesting enough to justify a few charts. This data came from the November 2012 fact sheet. As context for the numbers, the population of the city is about 807,000 and the physical area is about 48 square miles.

Our favorite fact learned from the MTA report is that there is a specific citation for “driving through a parade” — hopefully performed very slowly and carefully. And we suppose a terrific number of unmanned cars must be rolling down our hills like golf balls, because there were 65,000 tickets issued for not curbing one’s wheels on an incline.
